UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Mining Memory: People from Your Past,
Characters in Your Future.

LVW is holding a writing workshop led by Walt Peterson at Greensburg Hempfield Area Library on Saturday, April 11, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Here’s your chance to do some hands-on writing and reading of your work!

This will be an enjoyable workshop on some of the finer points of how we make our characters in fiction, poetry, and memoir jump off the page for readers.

“Writers need to create vibrant characters,” Walt says. “We’ll share writing hacks and tips using dreams, journals, friends, plots, and passion in our writing.”

Walt Peterson has won the Gribble Award for Short Fiction and the Acorn-Rukeyser Award for his poetry collection In the Waiting Room of the Speedy Muffler King. His recent full-length book, Talking Smack to the Dead, is a hybrid short story and poetry collection.

Poet Jan Beatty said of it, “Peterson runs low and hot through the land of adrenalin. These are hemi-powered poems, lines of tripped-out rhythms.”

Walt is a three-time winner of the Westmoreland Award for Short Story, in 2023, 2024, and in 2025 for “Please Don’t Spit on the Floor/Remember the Johnstown Flood.” He is a Fellow in the Western PA Writing Project as well as the National Writing Project. He founded the Prison Arts Program at SCI Pine Grove, Indiana County. He admires LVW and their community outreach programs.

All LVW members are welcome to attend the business meeting from noon to 1:30 in the same room at GHAL. Greensburg Hempfield Area Library is at 237 S. Pennsylvania Ave in Greensburg, PA 15601. The meeting room is on the second floor; there is an elevator.

The workshop is free to LVW members and $5 for nonmembers. Members of the public are welcome. Registration is required and spots are limited. To register, click the button below!
