Thoburn Conference Scholarship Application

Ligonier Valley Writers invites students who will be high school seniors in the fall or who are graduating this year to apply for a scholarship to its prestigious summer writing conference. The Tina Thoburn Memorial Scholarship honors one of the founders of the LVW Conference in 1986.  The scholarship includes the seminars and workshops all day Saturday, as well as a lunch where faculty members will read from their work and the Thoburn Lecture.

This is an opportunity for young writers to hone their craft with the help of published experts in a supportive atmosphere. They can focus on one genre or mix and match to explore several interests. The scholarship is open to all accredited students in Pennsylvania who are entering Grade 12 or have just graduated from high school. Applications must be postmarked by June 30.

The 23rd LVW Conference will take place July 17 at the Ligonier Camp and Conference Center. Faculty members this year include Jan Beatty, who has received the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry and hosts Prosody on WYEP-FM, teaching poetry; Anahita Firouz, whose novel In the Walled Gardens is about Iran on the brink of revolution, teaching fiction; Chris O’Toole, whose features have been published in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the International Herald-Tribune, teaching nonfiction (feature articles); and Greg Joseph, bass player and singer for The Clarks, teaching songwriting.
