Thoburn Conference Scholarship Application

Ligonier Valley Writers invites students who will be high school seniors in the fall or who are graduating this year to apply for a scholarship to its prestigious summer writing conference. The Tina Thoburn Memorial Scholarship honors one of the founders of the LVW Conference in 1986. The scholarship includes the seminars and workshops all day Saturday, as well as a lunch where faculty members will read from their work and the Thoburn Lecture.

This is an opportunity for young writers to hone their craft with the help of published experts in a supportive atmosphere. They can focus on one genre or mix and match to explore several interests. The scholarship is open to all accredited students in Pennsylvania who are entering Grade 12 or have just graduated from high school. Applications must be postmarked by June 6, 2011.

Tina Thoburn Memorial Scholarship

The Tina Thoburn Memorial Scholarship honors Tina Thoburn, a guiding force of the LVW Conference since its founding. Tina died in 2007 after a long and productive career as a writer, educator, and mentor. This scholarship offers young writers a chance to hone their craft with the help of published experts in a supportive atmosphere. At the conference, they may focus on one genre or mix and match to explore several interests.

The scholarship is open to all accredited students in Pennsylvania who are entering Grade 12 or have just graduated from high school. The application must be postmarked by June 6, 2011.

1. An essay (250-350 words) explaining why you wish to attend the Ligonier Valley Writers’ Conference.

2. A sample of your work (1,000 words maximum for fiction or nonfiction, or three poems). Please label your sample with the genre that you think best fits it: literary fiction, genre fiction (specify genre), creative nonfiction, or poetry.

3. One letter of recommendation from a teacher or other adult.

2011 Application Form

Ligonier Valley Writers has four scholarships available for writers who want to hone their craft with the help of published experts in a supportive atmosphere at the LVW Conference on July 16, 2011. At the conference, they may focus on one genre or mix and match the sessions they attend.

The only criteria for the LVWC Scholarships are writing talent and financial need. Regarding need, let your conscience be your guide. Regarding writing ability, we ask that you submit a sample of your writing. See the guidelines below for details. The application must be postmarked by June 6, 2011. Writers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to apply.

1. A sample of your work (1,000 words maximum for fiction or nonfiction, or three poems or songs). Please label your sample with the genre that you think best fits it: literary fiction, genre fiction (specify genre), creative nonfiction (specify feature article, memoir, essay, etc.), poetry, or song. Your sample does NOT have to be in a genre that we’re covering at the 2011 conference.

2. A cover letter explaining your goal(s).
